The Journey: A story of failure, fear & Becoming
Everyone’s journey is unique. Have you ever felt out of place because yours seems different? Wondered if you’re behind while others advance? Have you doubted your worth due to your background or skin color? My name is Blessing Gumbu, a Shona boy from a rural village in the North West province. I faced criticism for not fitting the traditional male mold, which affected my self-esteem.
Attending the University of Cape Town (UCT) was a dream come true after excelling in high school. I enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Human Anatomy & Physiology and Biochemistry, my second choice, as my lifelong dream was to pursue medicine. The transition to university was challenging—I struggled with workload, imposter syndrome, and personal losses that made me want to give up.
However, a conversation with my mom shifted my perspective: “You are in university now, let go of high school you.” This helped me focus on the present and improve my studies. Although I didn’t get into medicine after my first year, I began to enjoy my science degree, realizing my passion for research and clinical practice.
As I let go of my rigid plans, I excelled academically, made the Dean’s merit list, and built connections. Inspired by Jeremiah 29:11, I recognized the stigma around science degrees and started a YouTube channel, BSc Chronicles, and two podcasts to advise and inspire students.
This year, I chose to pursue an honours degree instead of medicine, a decision I faced criticism for. Ultimately, I aspire to become both a neuroscientist and neurosurgeon, understanding that my path may differ from the norm, but it is uniquely mine.
We should embrace our journeys and never feel ashamed of our struggles. Each path is unique, and you’re not behind or insignificant. Focus on daily improvement and let others’ successes inspire you. I believe in our collective potential and the importance of kindness and support. Remember the quote: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” My journey reflects the strength from God, family, and inspiring individuals.
Joshua 1:9 reminds us to be strong and courageous; the Lord is always with us.
The future is exciting! Stay blessed.
