Seeing Heroism

Dear Friends

This week we want to spotlight a very special photo that comes to us from Ukraine. Oksana writes “Snowdrops in the yard are growing despite the snow….. like Ukrainian people”.

Snowdrops in the yard are growing despite the snow...

Thank you Oksana for sharing with us a glimmer of hope despite being surrounded by so much destruction and sorrow. You are an inspiration to the SeeingHappy Community.

Now more than ever, it is easy to become emotionally fatigued by all of the divisions that are taking place. In today’s newsletter, we want to talk to you about a concept which is scientifically proven to help people perceive the world in a new way: “moral elevation”. In order to make the world a better place, we must witness occurrences of hope and selflessness as a means of cultivating our drive to make change.

According to Jonathan Haidt, a Professor of Ethical Leadership at the NYU-Stern School of Business, he describes moral elevation as “the warm, uplifting feeling that people experience when they see unexpected acts of human goodness, kindness, courage, or compassion”.

How fitting then to share with you this article from The Greater Good Magazine which illustrates the power of seeing strengths and heroism:

How often do we see what is wrong instead of what is right? How often do we become somber because all we can see is the mountain of problems instead of the beacons of hope shining in the darkness?

Looking at what is good helps us to keep trying to overcome the bad. Heroism inspires us when all else fails.
