AI and Photography

Can algorithms capture reality?

“AI camera photo happy moments photography” created by Adobe Express text to image photo generator

Dear Friends,

There has been a great deal of talk lately about AI and the impact it is going to have on our lives. One place that it has already caused major headaches is photography: the world famous Sony Awards no less. This year the winner of the award decided not to accept the prize because he did not actually take the photograph that won; AI created it.

All we can say is “Wow”

The photograph is beautiful – take a look:

The artist says he created the image and submitted it to “spark debate”. It has indeed made photographers around the world ask: What is the future of photography? Who owns the images created by AI? How do artists protect their work?

These and others are important questions. There is also the question of Photoshop and how we might be “cheating” by inserting a beautiful sky into a photo for example. iphone photography is not left out of the debate either – think of all the Apps we can use to enhance or change the photograph we create.

Indeed do we ever really take a photo that is true to reality? We are all using technology of some kind. The great Ansel Adams rendered natural landscapes in black and white after all.

Here at SeeingHappy we believe in the importance of embracing the process of taking photos and of the content we choose to photograph. SeeingHappy started with a simple idea: to invite people to take a moment in their busy day to notice what they see as beautiful, what makes them happy, or what they are grateful for. We invited you to snap it and share to inspire others. We hoped to spread the positivity.

Now we see that there is so much more embedded in this simple idea – We can, for sure, inspire with photos of what we see as good in the world. We can build individual photo journals for us to savor anytime. We can start a spiral of positivity in ourselves and our community. We can also tell positive stories.

Content and process will always be primary for us at SeeingHappy. We are working to bring you more inspiration and more ways to engage in photography as a tool to enhance your well-being.

Stay tuned!
