Color as a Pathway to Hope

Dear Friends,

SeeingHappy is an organization that cares deeply about people and their happiness so we are deeply saddened by the present state of the world.

It is difficult at such times to continue to be believe in a good and beautiful world. It seems almost ridiculous to think about positivity and happiness. Beauty, gratitude, connection, hope, all seem distant concerns. But hope is the best bet we have to defend against depression and giving up. Hope is the cornerstone for optimism and resilience. So how can we hold onto hope when the world does not seem a very hopeful place?

We can start by concentrating on the pieces of our lives that we can control. However small those pieces may seem – they are a lifeline.

We can keep on believing that what we say and do matters. However small our contribution – maybe we smile at someone instead of frowning, maybe we reach out and hug someone instead of closing ourselves off, maybe we point out something beautiful when everything seems dark and dangerous.

What if those things that seem so very small and superfluous are the very things we need to pay attention to to keep hope alive?

Believing in a beautiful world and seeing that beauty around us everyday, actively looking for beauty in our lives and making sure we are surrounded by any small pieces that we find, this increases our happiness. Color is a great example – color in a sunset, in a flower, in clothing, anywhere we find it, color makes us happy.

THE POWER OF ATTENTION

Can we build hope and help ourselves cope in difficult situations by paying attention to the beauty and especially the color in our lives?

The scientific evidence tells us that it can and here at Seeing Happy we think it is a strategy worth trying. So we are asking you all to join us and take photos of color everywhere and anywhere and share them to our site. If we can turn the happiness compass just a fraction to the positive perhaps we can hold onto the belief that there is good in the world.
