If one photograph could hold your story—your roots, your spirit, your hope—what would it look like?
Take a photo that represents you—not just how you appear, but who you are deep down.

Let it reflect your legacy—the family, culture, and history you carry.

Let it express your roots—where you come from and what grounds you.

Let it reveal your purpose—what brings meaning to your life.

And most of all, let it hold your hope—the quiet light you carry, even in uncertainty.
This image isn’t about perfection or performance.

It’s about being seen.

It’s about belonging—to yourself, to your story, to the world around you.
Your Task
- Take a photo that speaks of who you are—authentically, honestly, and with heart.
- Write a short caption to go with it. Let the words give context, emotion, or voice to what can’t be seen.
What if this photo were like your signature, no name written, just the unmistakable trace of who you are?
Let this be your portrait of hope, grounded in who you are and who you’re becoming.
Behind the Collaboration
This unique collaboration brings together the visual storytelling talents of SeeingHappy, a non-profit NGO, and the Centre for Wellbeing and Flourishing in the Department of Student Affairs at the University of Cape Town (UCT). This initiative is part of Day Two of the inaugural UCT Flourish Summit, a month-long celebration of wellbeing and flourishing running throughout August 2025.
Through this collaboration, we invite the UCT community to explore and share the essence of human flourishing through the lens of a camera. This initiative builds on SeeingHappy’s mission to inspire positivity and wellbeing through photography, now brought into the UCT context to amplify student, staff, and alumni voices.
Selected photographs will form part of a flourishing showcase, with contributors celebrated for their creativity and insight. Most inspiring submissions will also be invited to participate in the inaugural Wellbeing and Flourishing Conference on 9 September 2025 at the Graduate School of Business, with the opportunity to co-present their work if they are available.
Showcase Details
- Eligibility: Open to all registered UCT students, alumni, and current staff members.
- Theme: Capture moments of flourishing, wellbeing, and positivity in your life or community.
- Submission Window: Throughout the month of August 2025.
- Recognition:
- Selected participants will receive a UCT-branded hoodie as a token of appreciation.
- Most inspiring submissions will be invited to co-present at the Wellbeing and Flourishing Conference.
This is your opportunity to pause, observe, and capture what flourishing means to you, and to inspire the UCT community with your unique perspective.
Selection Criteria
- Technical Skill: Clarity, lighting, composition, and overall image quality.
- Impact: The ability of the image to capture the viewer’s imagination and inspire them towards the concept of your story.
- Communication: How effectively does the photo and its caption communicate the theme of who you are?
